Pakistan Prime Minister Visit In Usa
If Labor want to win this year’s federal election, there is no seat more important than the seat of Macarthur. In an exclusive interview with the Advertiser, opposition leader Bill Shorten said the party’s hopes of governing hinged on the result in Macarthur and its candidate, Dr Michael Freelander. “We can't form a government without getting Mike Freelander elected in Macarthur,” Mr Shorten said. “If he wins, chances are Labor wins.” Labor’s desperation to win the seat – held by the Liberals for the last 20 years – was evident when Dr Freelander, perhaps the most recognised doctor in the region, announced he would run recently. The pediatrician will run against former Campbelltown mayor and current Macarthur MP Russell Matheson (Liberal). Electoral boundary adjustments last year saw Macarthur’s boundaries shift north, taking in parts of Werriwa – a traditional Labor stronghold. It meant the previously safe Liberal seat was now one of the most marginal in the country. Both parties in both state and federal elections have been guilty in the past of endorsing token candidates with no real prospect of winning. Dr Freelander, Mr Shorten said, was certainly not one of those candidates. “The best way to show we take it (Macarthur) seriously is by looking at our candidate,” he said. “What we’ve done is give the people of Macarthur a completely A-grade candidate. “We are taking the seat seriously by getting someone in who doesn't necessarily have to do politics. “Dr Freelander is a person who wants to give back to community.” Two weeks ago it was Liberal leader, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull’s turn to visit the region, as a guest speaker at a combined chamber of commerce business lunch. Last week it was Mr Shorten’s white van that rolled into Macarthur. His destination – Our Lady Help of Christians school in Rosemeadow, to promote Labor’s Your Child Our Future policy. The policy, he said, would guarantee federal funding to catholic, independent and public schools for the next 10 years.
